A deal might or might not be close, honestly who the hell knows when your source is Trump the confirmed congenital liar. We have been here so many times that very strong skepticism is now mandatory. What appears to be slightly different is that it is not just Trump saying it, Pakistan’s PM said that a ‘final text’ of US-Iran deal was close.
If indeed something is agreed, it is well worth remembering who tore up all previous agreements, and started bombing while in the middle of negotiations, and also how deeply aggressive and criminal Israel has been in all this. How did we get to this point over the past week?
We were where we are now at the start of the week – apparently really close to a deal …
… then the Iranian military, that had been apparently totally obliterated 20 times or more, shot down a U.S. Apache helicopter. Then Trump starts bombing them again, and did more war crime stuff …
By Friday no more bombing and once again we are back to “A deal any day now”. This below is apparently one claimed version of “the deal”. It appears to be a deal where Trump gets nothing and Iran gets everything, but you really can’t trust anything anybody on any side is claiming, so it might be right or it may instead be propaganda.
As for the actual outcome here, my cynicism leads me to ponder the thought that the war is not going to end as long as Trump gets to shoot missiles at people who won’t do what he wants.
Then again, it has been such a shit show that Trump may indeed agree to almost anything to get himself an off-ramp.
What is clear is this …
- Both sides really want an off-ramp
- Neither side wants to agree to anything meaningful.
It is highly probable that Trump will declare an absolute turd of an interim “deal” to be solid gold (as he often does), sign it, and declare “Mission Accomplished”. In other words, stop the economically damaging part of the war without resolving the core strategic issues, hence implementation will be very messy
Right now as I write this, Trump claims “a deal” will be signed today (Sun Jun 14), and Iran is saying Nope, not today.
What comes next?
Next 24–72 hours: expect either an electronic signing/announcement, or a face-saving delay described as “technical work.” If there is no signature today, that does not necessarily mean collapse. It may simply mean Iran is extracting more wording on sanctions relief, frozen assets, control of Hormuz, or foreign military presence.
Next 1–2 weeks: if signed, the practical focus becomes maritime implementation: reopening Hormuz, demining, rules for shipping, whether Iran drops tolls/inspection demands, and how quickly the U.S. eases its blockade. This is where accidental escalation remains very possible, because drones, mines, Revolutionary Guard naval units, U.S. escorts, and commercial shipping will all be operating in a tense, crowded area.
One Final Reminder: We had it all until Trump blundered in, tore up the Obama agreement, and then started this utterly pointless total shit show because of his total and complete incompetence.
