It took a man who was willing to break all the rules to tame a theory that broke all the rules. Richard Feynman was one of the most beloved and important physicists of the 20th century, yet while many anecdotal biographies exist, no one had yet conveyed to the public why he is a hero to most living physicists today. I agreed to write a scientific biography in part because it gave me the opportunity to read all of his papers, but I had no idea of how significantly writing about Feynman’s life would affect my own. This is my first biography, and I tried to create a new mold for scientific biographies. As a physicist myself, I was able to attempt to explain the science as well as the man, and I tried to explain Richard’s science as seen through the arc of his life. In so doing I hope to be able to use Richard Feynman’s remarkable life and career to provide a new porthole into to the key developments in physics of the 20th and 21st centuries. “
