The announcement that they had picked singer and songwriter Bob Dylan as the winner certainly has indeed sent the media into a bit of a frenzy. I do also now wonder if this means that Stephen King can get a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame.
So stepping back, let’s ask why there is a prize Nobel for Literature?
Within his will Alfred Nobel stipulated that his fortune was to be used to establish five categories, and literature was one of those five. The precise wording within his will reads …
“The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: /- – -/ one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction …”
… and that is basically the entire remit for it.
The decision regarding who will receive the prize each year is made by the Swedish Academy. That was founded in 1786 by King Gustav III to promote the Swedish language, and so when the Nobel prize was setup they were deemed to be the best choice in Sweden to make such a decision.
The words, “ideal direction” have resulted in a few issues over the years. This is because they have been embraced literally at times as part of the decision making process and the result is that some very well-know high-class and well-deserving authors never received the award. For example James Joyce, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Marcel Proust, Henrik Ibsen, and Henry James never received it.
It has perhaps been getting a bit better, but the words “ideal direction” still linger over it all and so this award is not just about literary merit but also clearly includes idealism as a very decisive factor in the choice. This basically means that it can become quite political and so an author of considerable literary prowess might be passed over for one who promotes human rights.
As might be anticipated, criticism abounds, and so many a case will be made for those who never received it and yet should have, and also for those that did, but perhaps should not have. The words, “ideal direction”, will continue to haunt the proceedings because they simply cannot be avoided, forgotten, or passed over. This means that the Nobel Prize can never be the definitive literature benchmark, but we also cannot dismiss it because it is still highly significant.
Lists
Here is a list of the top ten most popular winners, and yes, it is perhaps a very subjective list …
Perhaps the most potent criticism of it all is a list of highly notable writers who did not win it ..
- Leo Tolstoy
- Henrik Ibsen
- Émile Zola
- Mark Twain
- James Joyce
- Anton Chekhov
- Marcel Proust
- Henry James
- Karel Čapek
- W. H. Auden
- Graham Greene
- Salman Rushdie
- Arthur Miller
- Philip Roth
- Thomas Pynchon
- Cormac McCarthy
- … and many more
As noted by one writer, the fact that this one is so often not the best choice is truly understandable …
“eighteen (or sixteen) Swedish nationals will have a certain credibility when weighing up works of Swedish literature, but what group could ever really get its mind round the infinitely varied work of scores of different traditions. And why should we ask them to do that?”
This year is more than a little bit different.
It will be popular with the public in general, but I suspect the book crowd are not exactly wholly thrilled.
As for Mr Dylan himself, so far he has not commented, and as for why they decided to pick him, that perhaps is very much down to the observation that The Times They Are A-Changin’. He was very much the voice of the 60s and what is wholly impressive is that more than half a century later is is still up on stage touching hearts.

Biobibliographical Notes
Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. He grew up in a Jewish middle-class family in the city of Hibbing. As a teenager he played in various bands and with time his interest in music deepened, with a particular passion for American folk music and blues. One of his idols was the folk singer Woody Guthrie. He was also influenced by the early authors of the Beat Generation, as well as by modernist poets.
Dylan moved to New York in 1961 and began to perform in clubs and cafés in Greenwich Village. He met the record producer John Hammond with whom he signed a contract for his debut album, called Bob Dylan (1962). In the following years he recorded a number of albums which have had a tremendous impact on popular music: Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited in 1965, Blonde On Blonde in 1966 and Blood On The Tracks in 1975. His productivity continued in the following decades, resulting in masterpieces like Oh Mercy (1989), Time Out Of Mind (1997) and Modern Times (2006).
Dylan’s tours in 1965 and 1966 attracted a lot of attention. For a period he was accompanied by film maker D. A. Pennebaker, who documented life around the stage in what would come to be the movie Dont Look Back (1967). Dylan has recorded a large number of albums revolving around topics like the social conditions of man, religion, politics and love. The lyrics have continuously been published in new editions, under the title Lyrics. As an artist, he is strikingly versatile; he has been active as painter, actor and scriptwriter.
Besides his large production of albums, Dylan has published experimental work like Tarantula (1971) and the collection Writings and Drawings (1973). He has written the autobiography Chronicles (2004), which depicts memories from the early years in New York and which provides glimpses of his life at the center of popular culture. Since the late 1980s, Bob Dylan has toured persistently, an undertaking called the “Never-Ending Tour”. Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound, and he is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.
