CII declares Minimum age for marriage un-islamic in Pakistan

Dawn, Pakistan’s oldest and most widely read English-language newspaper, brings us the rather astonishing news that the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) concluded its 191th meeting with the ruling that the laws related to minimum age of marriage were un-Islamic and that children of any age could get married.

This is manifests itself as far older men getting marries to girls as young as nine.

Why?

Because that is what Mohammed did, and as the “perfect” man his example should be followed.

Seriously?

Yes, traditional Islamic sources reveal that at the age of 50 he married a six year old, and this this rather embarrassing fact is not only a huge embarrassment, but is also a religious license that gives an official Islamic endorsement to pedophelia.

The article goes on to explain …

The officials were asked if the international conventions signed by Pakistan related to child marriage would be violated after this ruling by CII.

Responding to the query the official said that the international conventions cannot be in contradiction to the constitution of the country or Islam and if they were, those particular clauses would not apply on Pakistan.

In other words … bugger any international agreements, laws, and basic human decency because apparently their 7th century primitive superstition trumps all that.

I don’t know about you, but right now I think I’m about ready to go and throw up.
